Atlantic salmon new regulatory measures presented at NASCO’s meeting
(CANADA, 6/9/2015)
Urgent action to improve understanding of salmon declines throughout the North Atlantic and to control threats to the species has been urged by the North Atlantic Salmon Conservation Organization (NASCO).
At the 32nd Annual Meeting held in Happy Valley – Goose Bay (Canada) this month, the Edinburgh-located organization presented the new rules adopted for Atlantic salmon fisheries and major research initiative for the species to be pursued
“Habitat loss through destruction, degradation or fragmentation is a major threat to wildlife and Atlantic salmon is no exception. It is clear, however, that where habitat is improved, salmon can respond despite the current period of low marine survival," pointed out NASCO Vice President, Joannes Hansen, who was the acting President for the meeting.
The new steps taken include a multi-annual measure to take management decisions for the salmon fishery at the Faroe Islands with due consideration to the scientific advice, which indicates that there should be no fishery in 2016, 2017 and 2018.
Meanwhile, in the case of the West Greenland salmon fishery, a new plan was agreed as part of a new regulatory measure that, when implemented, will further improve monitoring and control of that fishery.
While a consensus could not be reached on the level of a catch limit for the fishery, Greenland committed to limit its total annual catch to 45 tonnes in 2015, 2016 and 2017.
Another measure NASCO has taken is the creation of Salmon at Sea (SALSEA) Programme, through which the organisation’s International Atlantic Salmon Research Board intends to track salmon from their rivers of birth out into the ocean to improve knowledge of where mortality is occuring and what is causing it.
During the meeting, NASCO Parties reported on the progress made in implementing actions related to NASCO agreements on the management of fisheries, habitat protection and restoration, and aquaculture and related activities.
The 33rd Annual Meeting of NASCO will be held during 7-10 June, 2016 in Germany.
The Parties to the Convention are: Canada, Denmark (in respect of the Faroe Islands and Greenland), the European Union, Norway, Russia and USA. There are 35 non-government observers accredited to the Organization.
