The main employers' associations and unions of the community canning industry signed a joint declaration yesterday in Santiago in which they join forces to defend their business from the unfair competition that is implied by the conditions under which some trade agreements with third countries are signed. The one that the EU is pursuing with Thailand is the greatest example, but other agreements that are processed with other countries in Southeast Asia, especially damaging to the canned tuna industry, are no less damaging, in the opinion of the group.

The Council of the European Union reached a political agreement on the fishing opportunities in the Baltic Sea for 2025, following the Commission proposal made in August this year.
The Council has adopted the total allowable catch (TAC) proposals for several key stocks, including sprat (-31%) and plaice (rollover). For eastern cod and western cod, the Council has decided to set by-catch TACs only, so fishing will remain limited to accidental catches while targeting other species. Western Baltic herring will, in principle, also have a bycatch-only TAC, but the Council maintained an exception for small-scale coastal fishers. Catches of salmon in the main basin are also limited to by-catches, except during the summer in the coastal areas of the Aland Sea and the Gulf of Bothnia. The agreement allows considerable increases in catches of Bothnian herring (+21%), Riga herring (+10%), and central Baltic herring (+108%).
The Council followed the Commission’s proposal on numerous elements. However, the Commission is concerned that some elements of the agreement are less likely to contribute to the recovery of certain stocks than the Commission proposal and may not be in line with the applicable legal framework, including the Baltic multiannual plan. This is the case for the total allowable catches (TACs) for sprat and western herring, as well as continued targeted commercial fisheries for western Baltic herring and recreational fisheries for main basin salmon.
In September 2024, South Korea's imports of frozen whiteleg shrimp dropped by 28%, totaling 325 tons compared to 488 tons in the same month last year.
The cumulative imports for the year through September reached 4,618 tons, reflecting a 9% decline from 5,073 tons during the same period in 2023. Frozen whiteleg shrimp represented just 0.7% of South Korea's total seafood imports, which amounted to 651,187 tons.
Ecuador remained the largest supplier, accounting for 60% of the shrimp imports, with 2,743 tons delivered up to September. Other significant suppliers included Malaysia (1,049 tons), Vietnam (303 tons), Peru (280 tons), and Saudi Arabia (243 tons). Notably, Malaysia had the highest unit price at USD 7.05/kg, followed by Ecuador at USD 5.97/kg, while the lowest price came from Saudi Arabia at USD 4.75/kg.
The import value for September stood at USD 1.8 million, marking a sharp 43% drop from USD 3.17 million in September 2023. The cumulative import value through September was USD 28.74 million, down 14% compared to USD 33.31 million during the same period last year. The average unit price of imports also decreased by 5%, from USD 6.57/kg in 2023 to USD 6.23/kg in 2024. These declines in both volume and price underscore notable shifts in the frozen whiteleg shrimp market, raising concerns about future trends in the sector.
