The Ministry of Production (Produce) authorised the start of the second fishing season for anchovy (Engraulis ringens) and white anchovy (Anchoa nasus) from 1 August, 2010.
According to the Ministerial Resolution No. 167/2010, the catch may be in the southern region between 16° 00'00" south latitude and the southern end of Peru's maritime domain.
This season will end after reaching the Maximum Permissible Total Allowable Catch Limit (LMTCP) or, failing that, on 31 December.
"This date may be extended or reduced according to environmental biological conditions, based on the report of the Marine Institute of Peru (IMARPE)," indicate the new rules.
According to the resolution, the anchovy LMTCP for indirect human consumption (IDH) amounts to 450,000 tonnes.
This limit was established taking into account the recommendation of experts at IMARPE in its report 'Development of the anchovy fishery in the southern region of Peru and its fishing projections for the second fishing season of 2010.'
The regulation also notes that during the fishing and processing vessels that operate must:
- Possess current pelagic resource capture permission,
- Purse seiner nets must employ a minimum mesh size of 13 mm;
- Have an on-board beacon platform-Satellite Tracking System (Sisesat).
On 30 June, Produce extended the validity of the first season of anchovy fishing in the south until 31 July, while not reaching the maximum total allowable catch limits.
The latest Statistical Bulletin prepared by Produce specifies that in April, 47,400 tonnes of anchovy were landed, 94.3 per cent less than in the same month of 2009 when 821,300 tonnes were landed.
Meanwhile, between January and April this year, 387,300 tonnes of anchovy were landed, 59.6 per cent less than the same quarter of 2009.
