The Ministry of Production (PRODUCE) decided to temporarily suspend anchovy (Engraulis ringens) and longnose anchovy (Anchoa nasus) capture activities in an area of northern-central zone of the Peruvian coast.
The measure took effect at 00:00 am on Sunday and will last five calendar days in the area between 06°30' and 07°00' LS, from 5 to 30 nautical miles off the coast.
The suspension was suggested by scientists at the Instituto del Mar del Peru (IMARPE), because in its report on the incidence of anchovy juvenile specimens in the northern-central area of the Peruvian Sea region corresponding to July 19, 2016, found that the incidence of juvenile anchovy reached 37 per cent in the mentioned area.
The measure applies to capture activities performed by artisanal smaller and larger scale fishing vessels within the said area.
IMARPE will perform the monitoring and tracking activities of the main biological, population and fishery indicators of the pelagic resource and will timely inform and recommend PRODUCE on the fisheries management measures.
Moreover, through a statement issued yesterday, PRODUCE informed on the preventive suspension of capture activity in two other fishing areas due to a high incidence of juvenile anchovy.
The affected areas are:
- Between 14° 00' S and 15° 00'S, between 20 and 40 miles from the coast (between Bahía Independencia and Puerto Caballas - Ica).
- Between 15° 00'S and 16° 00'S, from 05 to 20 miles from the coast (between San Juan de Marcona - Ica and Chala - Arequipa).
The suspensions will govern for 48 hours, from 00:00 am on Monday, July 25 until 23.59 pm on Tuesday, July 26.
