A working day was organized today Tuesday, headed by Undersecretary of Fisheries and Aquaculture (SUBPESCA) Eduardo Riquelme intended to analyze the results of the participatory meetings with the artisanal sector, which took place during June and July in the regions of Arica-Parinacota and Magallanes.
More than 110 participatory meetings were attended by almost 1,900 people, including union leaders and other fishermen's organizations.
A call was made by Riquelme, with the purpose of making the representatives of the artisanal sector to offer concrete proposals to outline the drafting of the "long" bill with a view to modify of the fisheries law, which President Sebastián Piñera will send to Congress, towards the end of the year.
According to SUBPESCA, the call to the different meetings was very successful, despite the fact that some of them were held in remote places with difficult access, so the undersecretary expressed "pride, satisfaction and gratitude".
In these meetings the proposals and those of the fishermen were recorded in minutes that will be used as resources to outline the guidelines of the "long" bill.
Today's meeting is headed by SUBPESCA division and the eight zonal directors of the service, who organized meetings across the country.
President Piñera sent to Congress a "short" bill that aims to reform the most controversial point of the regulation, which is linked to the automatic renewal and perpetuity of the capture licenses of the industrial sector, stating its commitment to modify the current fisheries law.
In addition, the Government has begun preparing the "long" bill, which will mainly address matters related to artisanal fishing.
Likewise, the reform initiative could cover issues such as the definition of artisanal fishing, modernization of management committees and the establishment of a new regime, as an alternative between the artisanal and industrial sectors.
