Independent Fisheries Ltd. (IFL) is analysing the future of its Woolston-based processing facilities, Christchurch, which has been affected by strong competition from abroad.
In an official release, the company has stated that at the moment it is considering a proposal for the closure of the plant, currently under review, since it has experienced a sharp decrease in sales since 2010.
If the proposal goes ahead, it would make about 200 employees redundant.
The strong competition generated by foreign products of similar quality, especially from Asian countries, which are sold at lower prices in key markets, has greatly affected the performance of the Christchurch factory.
