Progress made in Alaskan fisheries certification
(UNITED STATES, 11/11/2010)
The certification process for Alaska's fisheries is moving along, as the Alaska Salmon fishery has progressed to the full assessment and verification stage of the certification process, although a few activities remaining to be seen.
Remaining Schedule of Activities:
- Information Review and Desk Top Reporting: October 2010
- Proposed On-site Verification Activities: November and December 2010
- Reporting and External Peer Review: December 2010
- Forecasted Certification Decision Date: February 2011
The next stage of the salmon certification is to conduct a 2nd site visit for Alaska salmon, additional to the initial visit carried out in June during the fishery assessment validation phase.
This visit will take place from 15 to 19 November and for 2 to 3 December 2010. The purpose of this stage is to collect information on the fishery and in particular, to speak directly with representatives of the fishery, fishery management and associated bodies allowing an opportunity for information exchange and clarification of details specific to the management of the fishery.
The certification is being conducted by Global Trust Certification, an internationally recognized and accredited certification body and leader in seafood standards development.
Alaska seafood has long been regarded as a trusted source for wild and sustainable seafood.
The Global Trust FAO based Responsible Fisheries Management certification will offer additional value for Alaska seafood producers and processors selling in markets where third-party certification is required or desirable. Because the certification is being provided through ASMI, it will be free to Alaska customers.
