He has been Professor of Quantitative Marine Ecology at the Norwegian College of Fishery Science, University of Tromsø (Norway); Professor of Marine Polar Ecology at the Institute of Polar Ecology, University of Kiel (Germany); General Secretary and Chief Scientist at the International Council for the Exploration of the Sea (ICES, Denmark); Member of FAO’s ‘High-Level Panel of External Experts in Fisheries’; and Special Adviser to the Fifth (2002) Ministerial Conference on the Protection of the North Sea, and Chair of the international Issue Groups on ‘Fisheries’ and ‘Protection of Species and Habitats’ reporting to the Committee of North Sea Senior Officials. In 1994, he was appointed Honorary Professor of Aquatic Biosciences at the University of Stirling, UK. He has participated in national and international projects/programmes (e.g. UNCOVER FP7 project, MARE NOR and PRO MARE programmes in Norway) at levels from Programme Coordinator to PI. He has published 53 peer reviewed papers in international scientific journals spanning biological oceanography; environmental and living marine resources issues; marine policy; and integrated ecosystem-based monitoring, assessment and management.
