Some of the important issues contemplated in the documentary include over-fishing, ocean acidification and plastic pollution. The filmmaker identifies these issues and draws attention to them. She also gives voice to some of our society’s real-life mermaids and mermen—artists, activists and celebrities—who are working to raise awareness about the oceans’ state as well as acting to change the situation through talks, beach clean ups, research or artwork.
