The farming group Gigante Havbruk was established in 1988 by the founder Kjell Lorentsen and has its head office in Bodø municipality. In 2017, there was a production of around 10,000 tonnes of salmon in the company's locations in Bodø and Gildeskål municipality. Gigante Havbruk is one of the largest owners in the Salten Aqua group, which includes broodstock and smolt production, butchery and sales company. Through the wholly-owned subsidiary Gildeskål Forskningsstasjon (GIFAS), the company conducts significant research and development activities. A number of development projects have been initiated and carried out, including within exposed aquaculture.
Development project Offshoremerd is led by Gigante Offshore, and several central knowledge environments and supplier companies contribute to the work.
