AquaFuture Spain’23 offers an ambitious programme with sixty recognised experts from the national and international aquaculture sector.

They collect biological and compliance data that assists scientists, fisheries enforcement officers and economists to provide the advice and support that managers need to make wise decisions on the future use of this important resource.
The work is rewarding and challenging, requiring dedicated, honest and tough individuals, who can work long hours, can be away from home long periods and often in very difficult conditions at sea and can communicate and interact well with different people while at the same time, be considerate and conscious of the sensitivity of the environment they are working in.

Bonito is gradually reaching the main markets of the Cantabrian coast. Today it was the turn of Hondarribia, Gipuzkoa, which held the first auction of inshore bonito with the Eusko Label of this 2023 campaign. The small gear vessel "Gure Ama Martina" has unloaded close to 12,000 kilos of this tuna.

Two of Japan’s biggest trading companies, Marubeni and Sumitomo, have separately begun partnerships with insect protein companies, aiming to both use and sell the alternative protein for aquaculture feed purposes in Japan.
Japan is the second-largest user of fishmeal in the world, with much of it imported from Peru for its yellowtail and sea bream aquaculture operations. But recently, prices for fishmeal have been rising, leading to interest in alternatives.

The Government of the Faroe Islands will impose further restrictive measures against Russia by considerably limiting port access for Russian fishing vessels.
Only fishing vessels exclusively conducting fisheries under the bilateral agreement between the Faroe Islands and Russia will be allowed to enter Faroese ports. The activities of Russian fishing vessels in port will be restricted to crew change, bunkering, provisioning, landing and transshipment.
Services related to maintenance will be prohibited and the purchase of goods restricted.
Blumar announced the results obtained during the first quarter of 2023, announcing a 23% increase in its operating income compared to the same period of 2022, equivalent to $182.4 million dollars. Earlier this year, Frosta, a leading German manufacturer of frozen products, launched NPD vegan fish fingers across major German retailers, after three years of development.
Frosta, which reported increased sales of its brand of frozen foods in 2022, said that part of the success came from its plant-based innovations, such as vegan Asian street food dishes.
Additionally, despite the overall frozen fish market sharply declining sales, Frosta’s fish sticks were “the darlings of the public,” becoming an increasingly popular choice among consumers, reported the company.
Described as “indistinguishable” from the classics, the vegan product targets the growing flexitarian consumer in Germany. It is manufactured at an exclusive production line at Frosta’s facility in the seaside town of Bremerhaven.[continues...]
