CHINA
Friday, December 08, 2023

China's largest comprehensive fishery scientific survey vessel, Lanhai (Blue Ocean) 201, recently set sail for the first time to carry out fishery resource survey tasks. After quarantine inspection by Shanghai Chongming Customs, the Lanhai 201 has departed from Shanghai Hengsha Fishing Port, according to local media reports on Wednesday.

The Lanhai 201 survey vessel is the largest investment, tonnage, and most advanced facility of its kind by the Chinese Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Affairs. It belongs to the East China Sea Fisheries Research Institute of the Chinese Academy of Fishery Sciences and is a 3,000-ton fishery comprehensive scientific survey vessel. It was independently developed and designed by China and has global navigation capabilities (outside of polar ice regions).

Weighing 3,000 tons and measuring 84.5 meters in length and 15 meters in width, the vessel has a cruising power of 10,000 nautical miles and integrates advanced technologies, according to the Xinhua News Agency.

Other Media | EuropaAzul: The Cantabrian fleet has hopes of completing a good anchovy coastal

SPAIN
Friday, March 01, 2024

The Cantabrian fleet hopes to complete a good anchovy coastal campaign, the official start of which is March 1. The good recruitments in recent years have made possible the highest quota in 18 years, with a total of 31,614 tons for Spain, 1,432 more than in 2023, according to the note published this Thursday in the Official State Gazette. It is the largest figure that Spain will have at its disposal and from which our farms will benefit, since the Basque fleet is the largest anchovy fleet in the Cantabrian Sea, and the one that fishes the most, and wants to take advantage of the increase in the Spanish quota. to improve the numbers of previous years.

IN BRIEF - NFI 2023’s New Member Expansion Continues in 2024

UNITED STATES
Thursday, February 29, 2024

Reston, VA – At a time when there are great challenges within the sector, companies are uniting under the National Fisheries Institute’s umbrella to find collective solutions. In 2023, NFI broke its record for new members in a single year, welcoming 22 companies in 12 months. In just the first two months of 2024, the nation’s largest seafood association has already broken that record welcoming 23 new members.

“We’re hearing from so many companies that now is an important time to engage and help chart the trajectory of the seafood industry,” said NFI President and CEO Lisa Wallenda Picard. “NFI members agree that seafood is the solution for feeding future generations.”

NFI continues to diversify its membership with the addition of innovative upstart companies and traditional industry powerhouses.

“NFI is in the midst of its own strategic planning that will help design its course for the next 3 to 5 years, and likely beyond,” said NFI Chair Santiago Alvarez, CEO of Alpha Gamma Group. “Shaping seafood’s narrative, growing support for advocacy efforts, and connecting the industry is at the heart of that effort. And as we’ve seen, the seafood community understands that now is an ideal time to be a part of NFI.”

NFI will hold its annual Leadership Summit, September 23-26 at the Intercontinental Wharf, Washington, D.C.

IN BRIEF - Seafarms 'very active' raising funds amid appeal over court ordered liquidation of prawn project

AUSTRALIA
Thursday, February 29, 2024

Last week a court overturned a Deed of Company Arrangement (DOCA) for prawn producer Seafarms (ASX: SFG) to salvage a planned mega-project spanning northern NT and WA, but a stay order allows the Darwin-headquartered company to appeal by 22 March.

The Federal Court determined that the DOCA would allow Seafarms' Project Sea Dragon (PSD) to avoid its liability to construction contractor Canstruct over works at a prawn facility in Legune Station in NT over the border from Kununurra, which an adjudicator had previously deemed to be owed $13.9 million - a decision that prompted the group's calling in of voluntary administrators in early 2023.

The court also ordered the project to be wound up with KordaMentha as liquidators.

But according to an announcement by Seafarms made after the market close yesterday, Project Sea Dragon will "continue its business as usual", with the founder stock centre in Exmouth, WA continuing to improve the quality and performance of broodstock targeted for the project.

"PSD is currently producing export product from Seafarms' Queensland operations to build the export market for PSD and continues to be very active in pursuing funding for Project Sea Dragon," the company stated.[...]

IN BRIEF - Barramundi Group: Facility offer of BND 15mil received for expansion of Brunei operations

BRUNEI DARUSSALAM
Thursday, February 29, 2024

Barramundi Group Ltd (“Barramundi Group” or the “Company”) (EURONEXT: BARRA) is pleased to announce that its Brunei operations have secured a facility offer of BND $15 million from a Bruneian financial institution.

The facility, subject to finalization and completion, will be used to fund the first phase of the Brunei expansion and pivot to BG 2.0. The financing allows us to execute the 2 key components of this first phase:

  • The construction of a RAS Broodstock and Hatchery center, complementing the existing RAS Nursery operations; and
  • Immediate deployment of sea cages at our existing sea lease, Pelong Rocks. This deployment is slated for mid 2024.

With the new broodstock and hatchery facility, the Brunei operations will be able to capitalize on the genetic nucleus from our Singapore broodstock – naturally bred and selected over 20 years – to spawn and culture fry and fingerling within Brunei. The capacity of this facility will allow Brunei to be sufficient not only for the Phase 1 Pelong Rocks grow-out cages, with an annual capacity of 1,000 tonnes, but also for Phase 2 requirements of the planned 3,000 tonne land-based RAS facility.

The immediate deployment of Pelong Rocks will help to smoothen the gap in production and revenues, but also provide the Group with an opportunity to re-enter the China market – one of our largest and key markets, previously unreachable with a Singapore-grown product.[...]

IN BRIEF - Incopesca will implement a new shrimp farming system, find out what it is about

COSTA RICA
Thursday, February 29, 2024

With this mechanism you obtain around 3.5 kilos of shrimp per m2

The Costa Rican Institute of Fisheries and Aquaculture (Incopesca) carried out scientific studies to determine the potential of "biofloc" technology, a sea shrimp farming system in artificial ponds located in mountainous areas.

The entity deploys the project in different indigenous areas in the Caribbean, so that they have an economic alternative linked to sustainable practices.

Incopesca verified through trials at its Diamantes Aquaculture Station in Guápiles that biofloc guarantees more productivity than conventional systems.

With this mechanism, around 3.5 kilos of shrimp per m2 are obtained, compared to traditional methods that obtain around 0.15 kilos per m2.

In addition, this technology guarantees greater health for the shrimp by ridding it of any pathogens.

This also allows shrimp farming in areas far from the coasts, the system uses clean technology and saves water resources compared to traditional methods.

Producers have the ability to reduce food consumption for the species, since they add a carbon source that stimulates bacterial growth that converts toxic nitrogenous waste into biomass to feed the shrimp.
