IN BRIEF - Proposed fish plant closures put 80 jobs at risk

Friday, July 12, 2024

Salmon processing facilities in Lewis could be shut down with the loss of about 80 jobs.

Owner Bakkafrost Scotland said closing its sites at Marybank and Arnish, near Stornoway, would be a temporary but extended measure.

The company said the move had been proposed because the majority of its fish were harvested in the first part of the year and there would be minimal activity for the facilities for the next 18 months.

Western Isles SNP MSP Alasdair Allan said Bakkafrost was one of the biggest employers in the area and losing so many jobs would be "devastating".

Faroese-owned Bakkafrost Scotland said: “Our board has been forced to consider extremely difficult scenarios in order to futureproof the business and secure our remaining staff across Scotland.

"One of the scenarios proposed is that we close the Arnish Harvest Station and the Marybank Processing Facility for an extended period.

“We intend to start a period of collective consultation with those potentially affected and hope to complete this over the coming weeks.”

IN BRIEF - FAO and IFFO highlight the importance of the Peruvian anchovy fishery for world nutrition

Friday, July 12, 2024

Important international organizations highlighted the role that the Peruvian anchovy plays for global food security. In recent reports, the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) and the International Marine Ingredients Producers Organization (IFFO) welcomed the results of the first fishing season in the central zone north, as well as the levels of sustainability with which the industrial fishery for said resource is managed.

Thus, the SOFIA 2024 report: The State of World Fisheries and Aquaculture 2024, presented by the FAO, indicated that the Peruvian anchovy remains within biologically sustainable levels in area 87 (South Pacific), an area where only 33% of the species that are captured show such stability in their populations.

“This conservation of the anchovy resource is due to the favorable environmental conditions and the good management of its fishery,” recognized the FAO in its report, which also highlights that the Peruvian anchovy is an important global source of fishmeal and fish oil, an ingredient basic for the development of aquaculture.

For its part, the IFFO, an association that represents the largest producers of global ingredients in the world, reported that, after the successful closure of the first fishing season in Peru, a positive trend is observed in the production of flour and oil. of fish by 2024.

IN BRIEF - VASEP: 'Tuna exports to Italy skyrocket'

Friday, July 12, 2024

According to statistics from Vietnam Customs, if last year Vietnam's fresh, frozen and dried tuna (except frozen tuna meat/loin code HS03034) could not be exported to the Italian market, this year the export value of this item accounted for 64% of the total export turnover to this market. Next is canned tuna. Exports of both of these product groups increased compared to the same period.

Contrary to the import trend from Vietnam, tuna imports into Italy from other countries are showing a downward trend, down 19% in the first quarter of 2024.

According to Eurostat statistics, Vietnam is the largest supplier of fresh, frozen and dried tuna outside the bloc to Italy, higher than both the Philippines and Indonesia. Meanwhile, in the canned tuna market segment, Vietnam is the 7th largest source for Italy, after Indonesia, Ecuador, China, Solomon Islands, Colombia and Seychelles.

There are currently about 8 enterprises exporting to this market. Of which, Yueh Chyang Canned Food and Mariso Vietnam are the 2 enterprises exporting the most tuna to this market, accounting for 86% of total export turnover.

According to businesses, the advantages of preferential tariffs under the EU-Vietnam Free Trade Agreement (EVFTA) are creating attraction for Vietnamese tuna products in the Italian market. And if the “bottlenecks” in raw materials are removed, Vietnamese businesses will have more opportunities to boost exports to Italy.

IN BRIEF - Support for CO2-neutral fishing

Friday, July 12, 2024

The Danish Fisheries Agency and the EU are supporting a new development project with methanol for fishing vessels

Methanol can become the CO2-neutral alternative to the diesel oil that fishing vessels use today.

A new development project, supported by the EU and the Danish Fisheries Agency with DKK 10.1 million, will now uncover the possibilities of whether fishing can go the same way. That's what associate professor Jens Brus Vestergaard from Aarhus University's Department of Mechanics and Production, who leads the project called "Methanol in Fisheries", says. This is written by AU Engineering, Aarhus University.

"The fishery is under pressure from the green transition, and the industry has already implemented measures to reduce CO2 emissions. The next step is the engine and the fuel, where we really see an opportunity to reduce the industry's climate footprint, which is why we are now starting this project, which has the potential to significantly reduce fishing emissions", says Jens Brusgaard Vestergaard and continues:

"The time has come now, because if the shipping industry really bets on methanol, development will be boosted. It creates an infrastructure for green methanol on a large scale that ensures security of supply and a price-realistic alternative to diesel,"[....]
