Far Eastern fishermen have successfully started fishing for Iwasi sardines this year. By May 15, 15 thousand tons were produced - 28% higher than last year’s level.

In 2024, the projected catch of iwasi is 579 thousand tons. At the same time, the volume of catch can be adjusted as the fishing season progresses.

Pelagic fishing (fishing for sardines, mackerel, and saury) occurs in the northwestern part of the Pacific Ocean.

The domestic fleet fishes for iwashi and mackerel both in Russian waters and in Japan's exclusive economic zone (EEZ). At the same time, the main volume of Iwasi to date has been caught in the Russian part; last year, a large share was provided by foreign catches.

Iwasi migrations into the Russian EEZ begin earlier every year. The active phase of the Iwasi sardine fishery will begin in the summer.

According to industry science, the largest volume will be in the South Kuril zone (465 thousand tons), in second place is the North Kuril zone (almost 100 thousand tons), the rest of the catch is in the West Sakhalin subzone and Primorye.

The volume of catch of Iwasi sardine in the Kuril waters in 2023 amounted to 544 thousand tons - this is a record figure for the post-Soviet period.

Iwashi sardine is a fish with valuable consumer qualities, rich in healthy fats and microelements. It is a raw material for the production of canned food and preserves - a popular and affordable fish product.

Fish products are produced at sea (on floating bases), as well as at coastal fish processing plants in the Far East and are supplied to the shelves of all regions of the country.

On behalf of the President of the Russian Federation, the issue of expanding subsidies for railway transportation from the Far East to the center of Russia for the Iwasi sardine is being considered. Currently, this measure to support the transportation of fishery products to saturate the domestic market applies only to pollock.
