With 74 vessels operating, the start of the squid season was described as auspicious by INIDEP, although the search for the South Patagonian stock failed

Less than three weeks after the official opening of the 2026 squid season, the first records are already outlining a promising scenario for the Argentine jigging fleet, dedicated to the capture of squid (Illex argentinus). According to an assessment by Marcela Ivanovic, outgoing head of the INIDEP Cephalopod Program, the average catch has reached 38 tons per vessel per day, exceeding typical figures for this early stage.

Of the 82 vessels authorized to operate in the fishery, 74 are currently active in national fishing grounds. “As of January 22, around 25,000 tons had been landed,” Ivanovic stated in remarks to FM 89.1 Vinilo, as reported by Roberto Garrone for Revista Puerto.

The strong abundance of Illex argentinus has allowed some vessels to complete their first fishing trip with more than 700 tons, a yield well above the historical average for this period.

“The fleet is operating in its usual areas, targeting the summer spawning stock, on the mid-continental shelf, between 44° and 46° south latitude,” Ivanovic explained. She also confirmed that she will no longer serve as head of the project due to the start of her retirement process, and that Nicolás Prandoni has been appointed as the new head of the program.

The contrast with the early opening aimed at the South Patagonian stock was stark. “We expected poor results. Fifty-three vessels participated—the highest number ever—but the total catch was only 158 kilograms. It was extremely low, practically nothing,” Ivanovic lamented.

Expectations had been shaped by the 2025 season, when 18 vessels landed 700 tons of high-quality squid south of 49° S. This year, however, the outcome was a complete failure, prompting the fleet to quickly shift northward.

“The Illex argentinus currently being caught measures about 20 centimeters in mantle length, weighs an average of 158 grams, is mature and spawning, size S and SS, with very thin flesh,” she detailed.

A key highlight of the season is the record level of scientific observer coverage. “This year we have nine observers, a record for our program, which will significantly strengthen our data collection,” Ivanovic said. She added that, were it not for the presence of foreign fleets beyond the 200-mile limit, fisheries management would be close to perfect.

“The companies comply with all requirements, submit weekly reports, and maintain excellent dialogue with the industry chamber,” she noted, again cited by Roberto Garrone / Revista Puerto.

Observers conduct daily biological sampling of nearly 150 specimens, analyzing mantle length, weight, sex, and sexual maturity stage.

Finally, regarding the impact of illegal, unreported and unregulated (IUU) fishing, Ivanovic stated that the greatest damage is seen in the South Patagonian stock, which sustained the fishery during the 1990s and early 2000s.

“That stock’s abundance has declined significantly. Even so, the national fleet can rely on other stocks showing strong abundance, such as the summer spawning stock on our continental shelf and the Buenos Aires–North Patagonian stock, which in 2025 reached abundance levels not seen in 17 years, with most catches remaining within national waters,” she concluded.

Illex argentinus

Illex argentinus
