INIDEP confirmed a record season with unprecedented yields and strong presence of foreign vessels at the EEZ boundary

The 2026 squid season began with historic figures. According to the technical report presented by the INIDEP (National Institute for Fisheries Research and Development), as of February 5, the fifth week of the season, 80 jigging vessels had caught 55,015 tons, accumulating 1,554 fishing days and an average of 35 tons per vessel per day.

Official statistics indicate that as of February 10 the jigging fleet declared catches of 64,762 tons. Meanwhile, total landings reached 75,549 tons, a figure that includes both jigging and trawl fishing catches. The total volume represents a year-on-year increase of 63% compared to 2025.

Unprecedented abundance at the start of the year

The report, prepared by researchers from the INIDEP Cephalopod Program and presented to the Federal Fisheries Council, states that the beginning of 2026 showed unusual abundance of the resource, driven by strong concentrations of the Summer Spawning stock.

The main area of operation was located in the Management Unit south of parallel 44° S, with catches concentrated on the outer continental shelf between parallels 44° S and 48° S and meridians 60° W and 62° W.

The survey, which covered from January 2 (early start of the season) to February 5, included analysis of catch, fishing effort, biological sampling and distribution of the Argentine jigging fleet, as well as an estimate of the foreign fleet operating outside the EEZ (Exclusive Economic Zone).

Outstanding yields and key zones

Rectangle 4563 accounted for 51% of total catch, with 27,998 tons and an average yield of 40.1 tons per day.

It was followed by:

  • Rectangle 456211,624 tons (21.1%)

  • Rectangle 466311,428 tons (20.8%)

Between weeks 2 and 5, average yields ranged between 37 and 47 tons per day, when the fleet operated on the reproductive stock.

Biological analysis was based on the work of 10 onboard observers, who collected 154 samples and analyzed 22,951 specimens. Researchers confirmed that squid caught north of 49° S were small-sized, mature and in reproduction, corresponding to the Summer Spawning stock.

Trawl fleet and foreign activity

In parallel, the trawl fleet — made up of 64 vessels — recorded catches of 6,042 tons at the close of the technical report. With updated data as of February 10, that segment contributed 10,791 tons, a volume that forms part of the overall landed total.

Outside the Argentine EEZ, fishing pressure was also significant. Between weeks 1 and 4, the presence of up to 230 foreign jigging vessels was estimated, mostly concentrated in rectangle 4560.

A report from the Maritime Traffic Directorate of the Argentine Naval Prefecture stated that so far this year more than 420 foreign vessels had been detected operating beyond the 200-mile limit.

Nearly 500 foreign vessels at the maritime boundary

The scale of the foreign fleet in the South Atlantic triggered reinforced control operations by the Argentine State.

Within the framework of Operation MARE NOSTRUM VIII, the Argentine Navy, under the control of the Joint Maritime Command, deployed the Offshore Patrol Vessel A.R.A. Storni and the P-3C Orion aircraft from Trelew Naval Air Base.

The Ministry of Defense reported that patrols are conducted along the outer limit of the Argentine Exclusive Economic Zone, where in some sectors nearly 500 foreign fishing vessels are concentrated, including jigging vessels, trawlers and logistical support ships.

“We patrol and monitor to ensure that no foreign vessel crosses that boundary. Sovereignty is action and we are ready to defend it,” officials stated.

With a season far exceeding last year’s figures and a strong foreign presence at mile 200, the beginning of 2026 marks one of the most intense starts of recent years for the squid fishery in the South Atlantic.
