The organization is gathering data from its members and will request a meeting with the Consellería do Mar to assess support measures

Santiago de Compostela. The Galician Mussel Producers’ Organization (Opmega) has detected episodes of mussel mortality in several rafts in the Ría de Arousa, one of the main production areas along the Galician coast, following the succession of storms that have affected the region in recent weeks.

According to the organization, the massive influx of freshwater resulting from heavy rainfall has significantly altered salinity levels in the estuary, generating considerable stress in mussels. This situation may lead not only to direct mortality but also to reduced growth, with the consequent economic impact on farming operations.

In response, Opmega has begun collecting data among its members to quantify the real extent of the impact across the different production areas of the Ría de Arousa. The objective is to prepare a precise technical assessment before formally presenting the situation to the regional administration.

Once the analysis is complete, the organization will request a meeting with the Consellería do Mar to learn what measures may be implemented to mitigate production losses and to evaluate possible economic support lines for the sector.

A new blow after months of instability in 2025

Opmega recalls that this situation comes after several consecutive months of instability throughout 2025, marked by recurring red tide episodes that forced the temporary closure of several farming areas. These toxin-related closures caused significant income losses for numerous mussel companies.

The combination of toxin-related closures and now the effects of intense rainfall further aggravates the financial situation of many operations, which face a scenario of high productive uncertainty.

The organization insists on the need for a swift response from the regional administration to cushion the impact and guarantee the viability of a sector that is strategic for the economy of the Galician rías.

Opmega
