More than 31,000 tons landed so far in 2026, with peaks of up to 500 workers operating per day

The Illex argentinus fishing season is experiencing one of its strongest periods in recent years, with the epicenter in the port city of Puerto Deseado, in Santa Cruz Province, where activity levels driven by the jigging fleet have reached unusual heights.

According to Revista Puerto, during 2025 the port recorded 36,248 tons of squid landings, while in 2026 so far 31,250 tons have already been declared, pointing toward a record-setting season.

Nationwide, as of February 18, 2026, a total of 98,237 tons of squid had been landed at Argentine ports. Of that total, 84,656 tons came from jigging vessels, 12,405 tons from trawlers, and 1,175 tons from offshore fresh freezer vessels (Colorado vessels).

Record activity at the Santa Cruz port

The intense flow of jigging vessels into Puerto Deseado has generated a level of port operations not seen in years. Work crews rotate in shifts depending on the number of vessels unloading simultaneously, reaching peaks of up to 500 operational workers in a single day.

Activity goes beyond unloading. The landed squid is consolidated at the port and containerized for export, with regular cargo vessels ensuring shipment to international markets.

However, landings depend on the fleet’s proximity to the fishing grounds. While vessels operate near Santa Cruz Province, companies opt for this port. If the resource shifts northward, the likelihood of choosing Puerto Deseado decreases.

Direct impact on the local economy

The mayor of Puerto Deseado, Juan Raúl “Pirri” Martínez, highlighted the multiplier effect of the fishery on the local community.

“We are facing an excellent squid season, an incredible fishing run, and we hope it continues like this in the coming weeks and months. Today we see a very active port. That is very important and it is reflected in the local economy,” he stressed.

The mayor noted that the results stem from joint efforts by the provincial government, private sector companies, and labor unions.

Infrastructure pushed to its limits

Martínez acknowledged that activity exceeded initial expectations.

“In some ways this has surpassed our expectations, because there were even vessels that had to go to other ports since we did not have the necessary infrastructure to serve them all,” he explained.

The economic impact is significant, boosting stevedoring, port services, and local commerce. “It is a huge amount of money being injected into the town,” he emphasized.

Illex argentinus

Revista Puerto

Illex argentinus
