The first day of the survey south of the 44th parallel showed very low catches and a high presence of hake. After nearly four months of operations and more than 90,000 tons landed, the Chubut Fisheries Secretariat is evaluating ending the season within the next few days.

The shrimp (langostino) survey requested by the Chubut Yellow Fleet Chamber (CAFACh) south of the 44th parallel failed to deliver the expected results. Reports from the first day indicated very limited presence of the resource and a significant presence of hake, leading the Chubut Fisheries Secretariat to order the early termination of the survey.

This situation has now opened the discussion about the possible official closure of the shrimp fishing season in the port of Rawson. According to information reported by Nelson Saldivia for Revista Puerto, provincial authorities are expected to make a decision in the coming days.

A long season with solid volumes

The current season began on November 15, 2025, within the jurisdictional waters of the province of Chubut. Since then, over nearly 120 days of operations, the fleet has achieved catches of approximately 90,000 tons of shrimp, a figure that confirms the stability of the resource in the region.

However, in recent weeks a progressive decline in catches has been recorded. Official data shows that in February 2026, the fleet caught less than half of the volume recorded in January.

This pattern is not unusual in this fishery. Catch peaks typically occur in December and January, after which they gradually decline toward the end of the summer.

Lower catches and changes in sizes

In recent days, several vessels have been arriving at the port of Rawson carrying between 700 and 800 boxes processed per day. This indicates that fishing activity continues, although with lower efficiency than earlier in the season.

In addition, changes in size composition have been observed. While L1 and L2 sizes predominated earlier in the season, most of the shrimp currently being caught correspond to L3 size.

Although this category remains commercially viable, processing plants warn that much of it is white-shell shrimp, a characteristic that reduces product quality and market value.

Seasonal production balance

Until a few days ago, official statistics recorded around 85,000 tons landed at the docks of the capital of Chubut. With the most recent catches included, projections indicate that the season will end above 90,000 tons.

The monthly breakdown of catches reflects the behavior of the resource during the campaign:

  • November 2025: 14,936 tons

  • December 2025: 27,964 tons (the best month of the season)

  • January 2026: 27,168 tons

  • February 2026: 13,846 tons

Adding the first days of March 2026, the official record reached 84,730 tons landed.

The season could end in just a few days

The previous season ended on March 15, 2025, when a historic record of more than 100,000 tons was achieved.

Although this year’s volume will likely be lower, surpassing 90,000 tons confirms that the shrimp resource remains healthy in the provincial fishing grounds.

Given the steady decline in catches, the Chubut Fisheries Secretariat is monitoring daily operations to determine the appropriate moment for closure.

Industry sources indicate that this coming Sunday could become the fleet’s final day of operations, which would mark the early end of the shrimp fishing season in Rawson.
