Friday, April 03, 2026, 09:00 (GMT + 9)

Authorities extend fishery survey after detecting 70% immature specimens north of 44°S, while the season surpasses 156,000 tons in catches.

The fishing campaign for Argentine squid (Illex argentinus) has reached a critical point: despite a strong productive start, the high presence of juvenile specimens has forced authorities to postpone the opening of new fishing areas in the South Atlantic.

The Undersecretariat of Aquatic Resources and Fisheries of Argentina decided to extend the scientific survey north of the 44° South latitude parallel until Monday, April 6 at 08:00, aiming to obtain more conclusive data before authorizing commercial activity in that zone.

A concerning figure: 70% juveniles

The decision is based on results from the survey conducted between March 27 and March 31, which found that approximately 70% of captured specimens were immature. This indicator is critical, as opening the fishery under these conditions could compromise the sustainability of the resource.

Technical sources warn that moving forward prematurely “makes it inadvisable to open the fishery in that area for the time being,” in line with international standards for responsible fisheries management.

Five vessels under strict supervision

The extended operation involves five freezer jigger vessels: Natalia, Xin Shi Ji 28, Vieirasa 17, Hu Shun Yu 08, and Navegantes III, all carrying onboard observers.

The operational framework establishes that:

  • The number of vessels may not exceed five units.
  • Any vessel leaving the area must be replaced by another with an observer.

The focus remains on monitoring the Bonaerense-North Patagonian Stock (SBNP), evaluating size, abundance, and reproductive status.

A strong season, but with caution

Despite this strategic pause, the season is showing strong figures. As of last week, 156,814 tons had been landed, reflecting a very favorable start to the campaign targeting the Summer Spawning Stock (SDV).

The breakdown by fleet highlights the dominance of the jigger fleet:

  • 131,418 tons: jigger fleet
  • 23,596 tons: freezer trawler fleet
  • 1,799 tons: fresh fish high-seas fleet

Recent context: international pressure and sustainability

In recent seasons, Argentine squid has become one of the most in-demand seafood products in markets such as China, South Korea, and Spain, with international prices ranging between USD 2,500 and USD 3,500 per ton, depending on size and processing.

However, experts and international organizations have reinforced warnings about the need to avoid overexploitation, especially in areas dominated by juvenile specimens. Argentina’s strategy of extending surveys aligns with these recommendations and aims to protect the species’ reproductive cycle.

What to expect in the coming days

The results of this extension will be decisive. If an increase in mature specimens is observed, the area could be opened. Otherwise, further extensions are not ruled out.

In a scenario where global demand remains strong, the challenge will be to balance short-term profitability with long-term sustainability, an equation that is increasingly central to South Atlantic fisheries.
