National Confederation Cites Undisclosed Health Risks and Potential Economic Crisis

BRASÍLIA  — The Confederation of Agriculture and Livestock of Brazil (CNA)has officially requested that the Ministry of Agriculture and Livestock (Mapa) suspend fish imports from Vietnam . In a formal letter sent last Friday, May 17 , the organization also urged the government to maintain current restrictions on Ecuador , citing a lack of transparency regarding disease outbreaks in both nations.

The CNA describes the move as a preventive necessity to protect Brazilian aquaculture. According to the document, certain diseases present in these countries have not been properly reported to the World Organization for Animal Health , calling into question the integrity of their sanitary surveillance.

Critical Threats to Production

The request focuses on two high-impact diseases that pose a risk to the industry's multi-million US$ value:

  • Tilapia Lake Virus (TiLV): Detected in Vietnam .

  • Acute Hepatopancreatic Necrosis Disease (AHPND): Recorded in Ecuador .

Francisco Farina , President of the National Aquaculture Commission of the CNA , warned of the consequences of an outbreak:

"These diseases have a high productive impact, with high mortality rates and significant economic losses."

Ensuring Fair Sanitary Standards

A primary concern for the CNA is the current lack of contingency protocols within Brazil to manage these specific pathogens if they were introduced. The confederation argues that foreign products must be held to the same rigorous scrutiny as domestic ones.

"The objective is not to restrict international trade, but to ensure that imports meet the same sanitary standards required of Brazilian producers," the CNA stated.

The Ministry of Agriculture (Mapa) is currently analyzing the request to determine the technical and strategic viability of a suspension.

Brasilia, BrazilThe Brazilian Confederation of Agriculture and Livestock (CNA) has formally requested the Ministry of Agriculture and Livestock (Mapa) to suspend fish imports from Vietnam . The CNA described this move as a necessary preventative measure to protect Brazil's aquaculture industry. According to the document, certain diseases present in these countries have not been properly reported to the World Organisation for Animal Health , raising questions about the integrity of emergency health surveillance systems.

Major threat to production

The request focuses on two high-impact diseases that pose a risk to this multi-million dollar industry:

  • Tilapia Lake Virus (TiLV): Detected in Vietnam .

  • Acute hepatopancreatic necrosis (AHPND): documented in Ecuador .

Francisco Farina, president of the CNA National Aquaculture Committee, warned of the consequences of the outbreak:

"These diseases have a high productivity impact, high mortality rate, and cause significant economic losses."

Ensure fair health standards

A major concern for CNA is the lack of contingency plans in Brazil to deal with the intrusion of these specific pathogens. The federation believes that foreign products must be subject to the same rigorous scrutiny as domestic products.

"The goal is not to restrict international trade, but to ensure that imported products meet the same sanitary standards required of Brazilian producers," CNA said.

The Ministry of Agriculture (Mapa) is currently analyzing the request to determine the technical and strategic feasibility of suspending imports.
