Salmon harvest accelerates in Alaska during third week of the season despite delayed start in Bristol Bay

Rising catches in Kodiak and Chignik partially offset the initial 50% contraction in the main sockeye salmon producing district

The commercial salmon harvest in Alaska has begun to accelerate following the opening of fishing operations across all districts in Bristol Bay. However, according to cumulative data through Saturday, June 27, 2026, the total volume harvested remains below the levels recorded during the same period last year.

Initial slowdown in Bristol Bay

The total harvest of sockeye salmon (Oncorhynchus nerka) in Bristol Bay has registered a decrease of more than 50% compared to the start of the 2025 season. So far, most of the fishing activity has been concentrated in the east-side districts, specifically Egegik and Ugashik.

However, operations on the west side of the region experienced a rapid increase following the first commercial opening on Saturday in the Nushagak district, an area projected to generate the largest sockeye salmon (Oncorhynchus nerka) runs in the region for this year, 2026.

Meanwhile, the Port Moller Test Fishery reported its strongest daily catch of the season on Saturday. This indicator suggests that the likelihood of Bristol Bay runs reaching an early peak of abundance is decreasing. It is worth noting that this test fishery assesses the presence of sockeye salmon (Oncorhynchus nerka) at the mouth of Bristol Bay, 5 to 7 days before the schools enter commercial districts, providing critical data on run timing and composition.

Historical increases in Kodiak and Chignik

In contrast to the trend observed in the north, commercial seafood harvest activities started during the last two weeks in Kodiak and Chignik reflect extraordinary dynamism. In these regions, sockeye salmon (Oncorhynchus nerka) harvests have increased by more than 100% compared to 2025 records.

Furthermore, the cumulative biological escapement to date —which represents the number of fish that manage to evade nets to spawn— in both the Chignik River and the Ayakulik River (located in southern Kodiak) has reached its highest levels for this time of year since at least 2017.

Biological restrictions in Prince William Sound

Finally, in the Prince William Sound region, the Copper River District has remained continuously closed since June 11. This regulatory measure strictly aims to conserve Chinook salmon (Oncorhynchus tshawytscha) populations. Despite this closure, controlled salmon harvests have occurred in other fishing districts belonging to Prince William Sound.

Ugashik
