Calvo Group reported operating income (EBIT) of EUR 27.1 million for 2010, representing an 80 per cent increase compared to 2009.

The company revenues totaled EUR 492.1 million, according to the Spanish canning firm during the presentation of the balance.

The president and CEO of the company, José Luis Calvo and Manuel Calvo, respectively, highlighted that the 2010 results were "the best in the history of the company."

They also said that in the first quarter of this year the turnover reached EUR 148 million, that is to say 16.2 per cent more than in 2010, and the exploitation gross result reached EUR 13.1 million.

In addition, in 2010 Calvo reached an exploitation gross result of EUR 40.7 million, representing an increase of 48.9 per cent over the previous year.

Manuel Calvo considers the revenues of 2010 (EUR 492.1 million) were achieved through internationalization and innovation, EFE news agency reported.

The multinational company, which includes the brands Calvo, Gomes da Costa (Brazil) and Nostromo (Italy), increased its sales in Spain by 2 per cent and 4 per cent in the Italian market.

Nationally, the Group achieved leadership positions with a 14 per cent share in the segment of tuna in vegetable oil and 8.4 per cent in mussels, while Nostromo tuna market share reached 9.3 per cent in Italy.

Company executives also stated that 73 per cent of turnover comes from outside Spain, where Calvo grows at a rate of 14 per cent annually.

Gomes da Costa leads in Brazil in the category of canned fish, and at the end of 2010 the market share in that country for the sardine segment was 39 per cent and the tuna one to 46 per cent.

Since early this year, the tune group has begun to ship tuna to two new markets: Belize and Canada.

"Our intention has been to enter the United States and it has finally happened. We are now in almost 70 countries. We have started exporting directly from El Salvador to 20 countries (Slovakia, Iraq, Korea, Latvia, Portugal, Dominican Republic, United States, among others, and to Central American nations)," added the CEO.
