The President of the Committee of the National Study of El Niño Event (ENFEN), Germán Vásquez -Solís Talavera, confirmed that a sequence of Kelvin waves – of warm water -- that will enter the country from Ecuador announces the occurrence of El Niño event.
According to the expert, this event will appear "from weak to moderate" in April and could be extended to mid- 2014.
Meanwhile, Abraham Levy, weather specialist, recommends that the fishing season should take place earlier because "the anchovy is to remain on the coast."
"As time passes, it will sink and there will be no way of taking it out," said the scientist.
While at present what can be stated is that this phenomenon has the potential to develop, it is necessary to be confirmed in May, he clarified. He also said that it has been presented at a time of the year in which it will not affect rainfall most, and indicated that if El Niño strengthens, it is possible that winter is not felt, Peru21 reported.
Furthermore, Grinia Avalos, Senamhi Climatology director, explained that it is unpredictable whether El Niño event will take place or not in Arequipa, Moquegua and Tacna. Only at the end of this month it will be possible to know if El Niño will impact these areas, as Kelvin waves will arrive in the north first and then they will expand.
Meanwhile, Instituto del Mar del Peru (Imarpe) indicated that the anticipation of a weak to moderate El Niño event does not necessarily mean a negative impact on the economy, reports Andina.
"These warming events [of water] favour the development of a current that carries oxygen to the seabed. This allows an increased production of bottom species such as hake," pointed out Germán Vásquez, president of Imarpe board.
"There are benefits to some fisheries that will increase their capabilities, although not so much for others, despite the displacement of the anchovy resource to the closest area to the coast," he added.
