The Honduran shrimp industry expects to end the year with a record amount in revenue from exports, expected to be the highest in the history of this sector.
It is estimated that the value of exports may reach USD 260 million, that is to say, the highest amount recorded in the 40 years the shrimp farming industry has been developed in Choluteca and Valle, El Heraldo reported.
According to a report issued by the Central Bank of Honduras (BCH) and the National Aquaculture Association of Honduras (ANDAH), last August the average price per kilogram of shrimp was USD 8.17, 26.8 per cent higher in comparison to USD 6.44 paid in the same month of 2013.
Throughout 2013 a total of 73.1 million pounds of shrimp was sent abroad for USD 219.8 million. The BCH and Andah explain that the increase in USD 40 million predicted for 2014 is due to an improvement in prices on the international market and increased export volumes.
According to statistics from Central Bank, shrimp exports totalled USD 145.2 million through August, a figure which shows an increase of USD 42.1 million with respect to those obtained in the same period of 2013.
Of total exports, 97 per cent (USD 140.8 million) accounted for shrimp farmed in Choluteca and Valle, while the remaining 3 per cent (USD 4.4 million) was the result of the capture of the resource in the waters of the Atlantic coast, reported La Prensa.
