The fishing company Camanchaca will benefit from an 18 per cent increase in its horse mackerel quota for next year, increasing from 42,000 tonnes to 51,000 tonnes.

On the other hand, its anchovy quota will drop from 129,000 tonnes authorised for 2014 to 100,000 tonnes by 2015. This decrease is related to the delicate situation the resource is experiencing due to climate change, such as, the El Niño current.

For sardine fishing, Camanchaca will have a quota of 88,000 tonnes for next year while its shrimp quota would be slightly reduced, from 7,000 to 6,000 tonnes.

According to a report by the fishing firm, resources are "sheepishly" experiencing a recovery amid the crisis faced by the fishing industry, Estrategia reported.

The overall catch quotas for 2015 recently released by the Undersecretariat of Fisheries and Aquaculture (SUBPESCA) together represent a decline from a total of about 1.8 million tonnes in 2014 to 1.67 million tonnes.

The fisheries and aquaculture operations generated for Camanchaca profits of USD 10.1 million up to September 2014, a result which represents a marked increase in comparison with the loss of USD 28 million that it had experienced in the first nine months of last year.

As it was reported by the company to the Superintendency of Securities and Insurance (SVS), this recovery was made possible thanks to improved margins in its three business areas totalling USD 47 million.
