The Government of Tierra del Fuego has preventively suspended Empresa Pesquera de la Patagonia y Antártida S.A (Pesantar) fishing permit, after becoming aware of a complaint made by an employee of the firm.
The provincial government, through the Ministry of Sustainable Development and Environment, initiated administrative proceedings in order to define the case responsibilities and decided to temporarily suspend the company’s fishing permit until the situation is clarified.
The National Undersecretariat of Fisheries and Aquaculture and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs received a complaint from an employee of Pesantar, who said there would be a relationship between the fishing company established in Ushuaia and a vessel that would be fishing in the Falklands without authorization of the country or province.
The National Fisheries Act establishes that national and provincial fishing operators must declare under oath that they have no link with fishing companies engaged in illegal fishing, and that includes companies operating in the fishing exclusion zone, which the British Government has illegally set around the Falkland Islands -- according to Argentina.
The Government of Tierra del Fuego explained that since there are signed affidavits, if the link denounced is proven, the license must be suspended and the authorized catch quotas removed.
According to the denouncer, Juan Benegas, Pesantar’s operation manager, Union Sur vessel, which belongs to Empresa de Desarrollo Pesquero de Chile S.A. (Emdepes), operated in those waters after entering into an agreement with Nissui Japanese group.
According to newspaper La Nacion, this ship would have obtained a fishing license from the British government to operate in the Falklands last year, but in parallel, the Chilean company is associated with Pesantar fishing company, which has licenses to fish in Argentine waters.
