The Federal Fisheries Council (CFP) unanimously decided to authorize a shrimp (Pleoticus muelleri) survey in waters under national jurisdiction, starting Sunday, May 14.
The purpose of this survey is to verify the presence of shrimp concentrations accessible to commercial fishing nets (with low or no accompanying fauna), before considering the opening of the area, under certain conditions.
The survey shall be carried out during five fishing effective days, in the area between parallels 45° and 47° south latitude, between the length 62° 00' W and the limit of the provincial jurisdiction. It will be divided into three subareas that will be prospected simultaneously:
- Subarea I: between 45º 00' and 45º 40' S;
- Subarea II: between 45° 40' and 46° 20' S;
- Subarea III: between 46º 20' and 47º 00' S.
Thirty three vessels will participate in the survey. Each business chamber -- CAPIP, Capeca, Capech, CEPA, CAIPA, CAABPA -- will nominate two boats, and the CFP will nominate two others (Arbumasa XVIII, for having been nominated in previous surveys, and Bogavante Segundo, for having carried out the latest research survey of the resource).
The remaining 19 boats selected by a draw tol be held at the National Fisheries Coordination Directorate on May 10. The draw will result in the designation of 2 vessels for the province of Buenos Aires, 8 for the province of Chubut and 9 for the province of Santa Cruz, being all the boats with seat in each province that have not been nominated by the business chambers able to participate in this draw.
The designated boats must have electronic mail for the observer to send information daily to INIDEP.
According to a report submitted by the Undersecretariat of Fisheries and Aquaculture -- Fisheries Management, and the INIDEP for the 2016 season and the beginning of 2017, shrimp were found in all areas and in similar quantities to the previous surveys, which would indicate that this year it is expected an abundance that is also similar to that of previous years.
