There are already 30 participatory meetings with the artisanal sector that have been developed throughout the country, in preparation for the "long" bill to modify the fisheries law.
Undersecretary of Fisheries and Aquaculture Eduardo Riquelme arranged to hold these meetings so that fishermen's organizations could participate effectively in the process that will conclude with the remission of that initiative.
The ideas and concerns expressed so far by the groups are recorded in the respective minutes of the meetings and will constitute feedback for the bill that President Sebastián Piñera will send to Congress by the end of the year.
In the meetings, the fishermen and their leaders valued the possibility that SUBPESCA had given them to be able to effectively influence the debate around the initiative.
The "long" proposal will address issues that demand a broad debate: the definition of what should be understood by artisanal fisheries, as indicated in an FAO report; the improvement of the management committees, and the artisanal extractive registry, among others.
The "long" law will be added to the "short" bill that the Government has already sent to Parliament. This proposal modifies the regime of the industrial sector, by ending the automatic renewal and in perpetuity of these licenses.
The dates of the meetings have been published since June 1 on SUBPESCA website.
