The Honduran government expects the country to resume its shrimp exports to the Mexican market in August, announced the director of the National Agricultural Health Service (SENASA), Ricardo Paz.
This possibility was advanced by the Secretariat of Economic Development (SDE), after several meetings with the phytosanitary authorities of Mexico, carried out in order to clarify the problem of the closure of the Mexican border for the Honduran product, reported La Tribuna.
In the opinion of SENASA director, with the establishment of the governmental transition commission of Mexico, Honduras has greater expectations of sending its shrimp back to the Mexican market.
The efforts made by Honduran Ambassador Alden Rivera have also played an important role, the official said.
Paz said that the commercial situation is within the agenda items of the transition committee of the new Mexican government, and in that context the Honduran authorities hope that by the beginning of August a final solution will be reached for shrimp export.
With the new Mexican president, it is expected to make it clear that there is no presence of the yellow head disease virus in Honduran shrimp, given that the Honduran government insists that there is no scientific evidence of the disease.
Shrimp exports (farmed and capture fisheries) generated USD 65.6 million in the first five months of this year, USD 0.5 million less than in the same period of 2017, as a result of a decrease of 2.1 per cent in the volume exported (202.5 tonnes less, 2.1 per cent), which was partially offset by a 1.3 per cent improvement in the price.
The main markets for Honduran shrimp were the United States and the United Kingdom, according to statistics from the Central Bank of Honduras.
The National Association of Aquaculturists of Honduras (ANDAH) estimates that the blockade that Mexico has imposed on fresh Honduran shrimp has caused the country losses that until May exceeded USD 19.1 million.
