Latin American Fishing Organizations Urge International Bodies to Close Gaps Hindering Proper Giant Squid Management

ALPESCAS members signed the Declaration of Lima during the X Ordinary Meeting, after reviewing various points concerning fishing activity and aquaculture.
During the X Ordinary Meeting of ALPESCAS, members of the Latin American Alliance for Sustainable Fishing and Food Security signed the Declaration of Lima, where they addressed several crucial points for regional fishing activity and aquaculture.
A central point of the declaration was ALPESCAS's urgent call to member countries of the South Pacific Regional Fisheries Management Organisation (SPRFMO) to accelerate the implementation of concrete regional actions. The goal is to reduce the existing gaps that currently hinder the rational and sustainable management of the giant squid, a resource of great importance for the region.

The president of ALPESCAS, Osciel Velásquez, expressed his satisfaction with the participation of prominent figures such as the Minister of Production of Peru, Sergio Gonzáles; the Vice Minister of Environment, Raquel Soto; and the FAO Representative in Peru, Mariana Escobar. Their messages were considered guiding and acknowledged the industry's commitment to the sustainable use of fisheries resources.
In the same vein, the president of the Fisheries and Aquaculture Committee of the National Fisheries Society (S.N.I.) of Peru, Alfonso Miranda Eyzaguirre, stated his firm commitment to join efforts to combat, discourage, and eliminate illegal, unreported, and unregulated (IUU) fishing, a significant threat to the sustainability of resources.

In this regard, Miranda Eyzaguirre urged the competent authorities to urgently ensure effective control of fishing effort in all fisheries. He emphasized the sector's concern about the increased fishing effort of distant-water fleets, specifically those exploiting giant squid in international waters of the South Pacific and Illex squid in the South Atlantic. He warned that this increase in catch levels in just a few years has not been accompanied by the development of scientific studies to support it.
Another relevant point in the Declaration of Lima was the concern about the risk of vessels seeking to evade the measures established in the Port State Measures Agreement (PSMA) entering ports or shipyards in the region.
Finally, the Fisheries and Aquaculture Committee of the S.N.I. of Peru and the National Chamber of Fisheries of Ecuador were tasked with identifying regional advocacy mechanisms in relation to the current situation, future development, and perspectives of the Agreement on Biodiversity Beyond National Jurisdiction of the United Nations.
