The Government of Tierra del Fuego decided to lift the suspension of the provincial fishing permit for Echizen Maru ship, belonging to Empresa Pesquera de la Patagonia y Antártida S.A. (Pesantar).
Undersecretary for Management, Control and Supervision, Eduardo Bauducco, said the company submitted documentation certifying that the total capital stock is held by Argentine shareholders, and has neither ties with Nissui Japanese business group nor with Empresa de Desarrollo Pesquero de Chile S.A. (Emdepes).
The official clarified that the decision to lift the suspension of the provincial fishing permit to the vessel does not affect the administrative proceedings initiated by a complaint, which are following the usual procedures.
The suspension was established following a complaint filed by Pesantar’s former Operation Manager, Juan Benegas, who accused the company of having direct link with Emdepes, the owner of Union Sur vessel, which had allegedly been operating in the Falklands in November.
The Echizen Maru entered the port of Ushuaia on 16 December 2014, and remained moored at the dock until last Wednesday.
Pesantar, which for over 25 years has been catching Patagonian toothfish among other species in the waters of Patagonia, was recently acquired by Newsan, a group of electronic products, through its division of foodstuff export, Newsan Food.
Newsan Group expects the purchase of all Pesantar assets will generate an annual turnover of about USD 30 million.
