Tilapia production in the Brazilian state of Paraná, a national leader in both production and exports of the species, is projected to double within the next three years, according to Deral (the State Secretariat for Agriculture and Supply).

This optimistic forecast is highlighted in Deral's Agricultural Situation Bulletin for the week of February 7-13. [Link to Bulletin]

Paraná's fish production and capture have steadily increased over the past decade, with the West and Coastal regions playing particularly prominent roles. Tilapia dominates the sector, representing 85% of its Value of Production (VBP), which reached R$2.07 billion in 2023.

"With ongoing investments in processing infrastructure, the outlook for the coming years is highly optimistic," notes Edmar Gervásio, a Deral technician, in the bulletin. "We anticipate the sector doubling in size in a short timeframe, potentially within the next three years."

Paraná's leadership in tilapia production and export is evident in its recent performance. Between 2022 and 2023, state production grew by 30.8%, while exports saw a modest increase of 0.29%.  However, 2024 has seen a significant surge in tilapia exports, with volumes shipped abroad 47% higher than the previous year.

In 2024, Brazil exported a total of 53,800 tons of fish, generating US$272.9 million in revenue.  Tilapia exports accounted for 10,800 tons of this total, with Paraná contributing 7,600 tons—representing 70.3% of Brazil's total tilapia exports—valued at US$34.6 million.
