Seychelles is making big moves in aquaculture! The country’s aquaculture facility is set to become a centre of excellence in the region.
They just opened the first Containerised Echinoderm Hatchery, a top-notch facility, earlier this year. It’s all part of their plan to shift from research-based aquaculture to commercializing it, in line with their Strategic Plan 2022-2027.
Aubrey Lesperance, head of aquaculture at the Seychelles Fishing Authority (SFA), explained that this hatchery is a crucial step towards establishing Seychelles as a leader in aquaculture research. It’s a big deal because it means they’re moving towards making real economic opportunities in aquaculture.
The Minister for Fisheries and the Blue Economy, Jean Francois Ferrari, sees this as a big step towards their goal of becoming a marine centre of excellence in fisheries and aquaculture. They’re not just building facilities like this hatchery; they’re also investing in training the next generation of aquaculture technicians and scientists.
The Seychelles Fishing Authority is teaming up with the Seychelles Maritime Academy to give students hands-on experience and exposure to the latest aquaculture tech. They’re also reaching out to secondary school students through a special program to show them the exciting opportunities in aquaculture.
It’s all part of their plan to develop a skilled workforce that can support the growth of the aquaculture sector in Seychelles. So cool to see them investing in the future like this!
