Positive outlook for pangasius exports to Canada

In the first half of March 2024, Vietnamese pangasius exports to Canada reached 2.3 million USD, up 7% over the same period last year. As of March 15, 2024, Canada imported more than 8 million USD of pangasius from Vietnam, an increase of 43% over the same period in 2023. This North American country still maintains the second largest market in the CPTPP bloc in terms of consumption. consumes the most Vietnamese pangasius, accounting for 20% of the total value of this sector imported from Vietnam.

Compared to other markets in the same CPTPP block, consumers in Canada are very fond of dishes from pangasius fillets, frozen catfish fillets, frozen pangasius slices/rings/chunks,... According to the Inteernational Trade Center (ITC), in January 2024, Canada imported more than 900 tons from Vietnam, worth 2 million USD, down 10% in value and up 28% in volume compared to the same period last year. In 2023, Vietnam will be the source of white meat fish (mainly pangasius) for Canada with more than 9,000 tons, worth nearly 31 million USD.

Canada imports pangasius from many sources such as China, Thailand and Indonesia. Pangasius also has to compete with many other types of fish on the market, especially frozen cod with HS code 030363 and fresh or chilled tilapia HS 030271. In 2023, Canada imported nearly 12,000 tons of products from the world frozen cod code HS 030363 is worth nearly 30 million USD, followed by frozen pangasius fillets HS 030462 with nearly 8,000 tons, worth more than 23 million USD, frozen haddock fillets HS 030472 with more than 5,300 tons, worth 30 million USD and frozen cod fillets HS 030471 with more than 5,000 tons, worth 43 million USD.
