ProChile: The Aquaculture of Los Lagos! Drives a Growth of US$1.98 Billion!

ProChile reveals a 5.2% increase in regional exports during the first quarter, with salmon and mussels leading the way.

Puerto Montt – Non-copper – non-lithium exports from the Los Lagos Region have reached an impressive figure of US$1.98 billion during the first quarter of 2025, registering a notable growth of 5.2% compared to the same period of the previous year. This is reported by ProChile's most recent analysis, confirming the strategic importance of the aquaculture, agricultural, and forestry sectors in the commercial dynamics of the south of the country.
This positive performance is largely due to the fishing and aquaculture sector, which continues to establish itself as the main export engine of the region, with shipments totaling US$1.849 billion between January and March, representing an increase of 6.8%. Within this sector, the star products were salmon and trout, which accumulated shipments of US$1.632 billion (+5%). They were followed by mussels, with a significant increase of 35%, reaching US$85 million; while fishmeal and crustacean meal experienced a significant increase of 39%, with shipments of US$36 million.
In the agricultural sector, fresh cherries stood out, totaling US$30 million (+55%); and in the forestry sector, wood chips recorded US$29 million, with a growth of 24.2%.

The main destinations for regional exports during this period were the United States (US$620 million), Japan (with a notable increase of 16%, reaching US$429 million), Brazil (US$172 million, with a slight decrease of -3.6%), and Russia (with a significant increase of 55%, reaching US$100 million).
“These figures not only demonstrate the excellent performance of the aquaculture sector but also the progress towards a more sophisticated and diverse export offer, which includes small and medium-sized exporters. Today, products such as mussels and cherries show high potential in key markets such as Asia and North America,” highlighted Ricardo Arriagada, regional director of ProChile Los Lagos.
