Puerto Deseado Records 50,000 Tons of Fish Landings

The good squid season brought dynamics to the Santa Cruz port where more than 39 thousand tons were unloaded. Now the port movement is intense due to the arrival of shrimp vessels that fish in national waters. The Secretary of Labor highlighted port operations without conflict.

Averaging the year 2024, the Patagonian port of Puerto Deseado is located third in the national ranking of maritime fishing landings with 50,250 tons unloaded until June 18. The auspicious harvest of the Illex squid species marked the activity of that Santa Cruz dock with 39,755 tons; while 5,755 tons of hubbsi hake have been unloaded in that port so far.

The beginning of the shrimp season within the Permanent Closed Area for Juvenile Hake with the opening of three sub-areas near the San Jorge Gulf, allows Deseado to have an intense port movement, and until last Tuesday 3,436 tons were landed of the species Pleoticus muelleri.

The Minister of Labor, Employment and Social Security of Santa Cruz, Julio Gutiérrez, made an exhaustive evaluation of the first six months in charge of the labor portfolio and highlighted that joint agreements have been achieved at the port level without the need to go to court. of conflict, as occurred in previous years and was decisive in the low activity of fishing unloadings in ports of that province.

As an example, he commented on the intervention that the labor portfolio is having in port matters, where they are collaborating in the union organization of the ports of Santa Cruz.

In that sense, he revealed that "we recently signed the joint agreements in Puerto Deseado and this week that closed a hearing was held in Caleta Olivia, where we are generating an agreement that does not yet have the rank of collective agreement, but it is a work format that the dockers who are in the midst of organizing their union are going to have.”

Avoid conflicts

Meanwhile, in relation to Puerto Deseado, he said "we have agreed on joint agreements with the port workers, winchers, shippers and stevedores, who are the ones who unload the ships when they arrive at the port unit."

“We see a labor conflict, wherever it may be, if it develops in the Province, we have interference and we address it quickly,” he stressed. At the same time, he recalled that “we were in danger of losing many jobs, we took charge and carried out actions to avoid that situation.”

On the other hand, the port of Caleta Olivia has also seen its performance improve in terms of fishing landings, since, as there were fewer conflicts, the dynamics were different from previous years.

All in all, at the Caleta Paula docks there are 27,412 tons of maritime discharges so far. Which are mainly composed of the hubbsi hake species with 25,224 tons, which shows the hake profile of that port. Only 58 tons of squid were unloaded there as a companion species, while until last week 1,881 tons of shrimp were unloaded.
