Government Presented Successful Results of the First Anchovy Fishing Season in the North-Central Zone

The Peruvian government presented the successful results of the first 2024 anchovy fishing season in the North-Central zone, which reached a landing of 2,430,589 MT, which represents 98.21% of the assigned global quota.

Aboard the Scientific Research Vessel (BIC) Humboldt, in Callao, the President of the Republic, Dina Boluarte, together with the Minister of Production, Sergio González Guerrero, announced the success of the season that officially began on April 16, 2024 with a Maximum Total Allowable Catch Limit (LMTCP) of 2,475,000 tons.

“We gather today to mark the close of a fishing season that has been exemplary in many ways. As president, it is an honor to address you, dear fishermen, fishing companies and authorities who allowed the successful development of this first fishing season, after going through very complicated years for the fishing sector due to adverse weather conditions," said president Dina Boluarte.

The head of state specified that the extractive activity demanded 12 thousand direct jobs and 37 thousand indirect jobs throughout the fishing chain. Likewise, she pointed out that 691 fishing vessels participated (294 steel and 397 wooden).

Likewise, she asserted that the numbers presented today are important and impact the recovery of the economy in the country, showing that in the month of May a growth of 5.04% was achieved, a rate that had not been recorded since the pre- pandemic. “We are facing the year of the country's economic recovery,” she reaffirmed.

At another time, President Dina Boluarte announced that through a supplementary credit 9.3 million soles (USD 9.3 M) will be allocated for the maintenance of the scientific research vessel (BIC) Humboldt, the main platform for research into our hydrogeological resources.

For his part, the head of PRODUCE, Sergio González, specified that the established quota for the first anchovy fishing season was confirmed thanks to the scientific research carried out by the Peruvian Sea Institute (Imarpe).

“Today we close the first season with positive news, because it was a responsible season and constantly monitored by the Ministry of Production. Furthermore, we consider that it was a successful season because more than 98% of the assigned quota was captured, which is equivalent to 2,430,000 tons,” the minister said.

It is worth mentioning that, through Ministerial Resolution No. 000289-2024, it was established that tomorrow, Thursday, July 18, from 00:00 hours, the first fishing season for the anchovy resource (Engraulis ringens) will be concluded and white anchovy (Anchoa nasus), corresponding to the north-central zone of Peru, in the maritime area between the extreme north of the maritime domain of Peru and 16º00'S

Likewise, Minister González explained that the main ports where the unloadings were carried out were: Malabrigo, Chimbote, Coishco, Callao, Supe, Chancay and Tambo de Mora; Likewise, the main plants that received the resource were: TASA (21%), Exalmar (16%), COPEINCA (13%), Diamante (15%) and Hayduk (11%).
