PRODUCE Promotes Construction of a Scientific Research Vessel for Peruvian Waters

The Ministry of Production (PRODUCE) has allocated S/ 50 million from this year's budget to initiate the construction of Peru’s first scientific fishing research vessel. This project, developed in collaboration with Servicios Industriales de la Marina S.A. (SIMA-PERU) and the Peruvian Navy, is intended to support the Peruvian Sea Institute (IMARPE) in ensuring the long-term sustainability of the nation’s marine resources.

Sergio González Guerrero, the Minister of Production, emphasized the strategic importance of Bill 8806/2024 CR, backed by the Congressional Budget Committee. He noted that the vessel would play a crucial role in preserving the fishing industry for future generations.

"At PRODUCE, we are grateful to the Production Commission of Congress for advancing this bill, which allows for the transfer of funds to SIMA, enabling us to conduct research on our hydrobiological resources," González Guerrero stated during his presentation to the Budget and General Accounts Commission of Congress.

Additionally, the remainder of the necessary funding will be secured through a loan, coordinated with the Ministry of Economy and Finance (MEF), expected to be finalized between November and December of this year.

2025 Budget Overview

For 2025, PRODUCE’s Institutional Opening Budget (PIA) will reach S/ 895 million, marking the highest allocation since 2021. Of this, S/ 504.4 million will be dedicated to the MYPE and Industry sectors, enabling up to 116,000 interventions. The Fishing and Aquaculture sector will receive S/ 391.1 million, facilitating 248,000 projected interventions.

One key initiative for 2025 is the creation of a Revolving Fund aimed at boosting the Fondepes budget by S/ 15.3 million. This will expand the availability of credit for fishermen and aquaculturists, supporting the purchase of marine engines, navigation equipment, fishing gear, and fish feed.

"This fund will ensure the sustainability and continuity of credit for artisanal fishing and aquaculture, driving the growth of the sector," González Guerrero concluded.
