New pathogen-free shrimp variety could fuel exports

The Rajiv Gandhi Centre for Aquaculture (RGCA) has come up with a high-quality shrimp variety free of certain pathogens. This is a first-time development in India and it is expected to strongly fuel shrimp exports.
The specific pathogen free (SPF) Litopenaeus vannamei can produce seeds faster and with higher survival rates. It was developed together with the Hawaii, US-based Oceanic Institute.
“The first batch of around 20,000 high-quality SPF L. vannamei broodstock produced at RGCA facility at Visakhapatnam is ready for supply to approved shrimp hatcheries at half the price of imported stock,” an official release stated.
