A team of researchers from the Faculty of Chemistry and Biology of the University of Santiago de Chile (USACH) is working to develop a vaccine to protect salmon from Piscirickettsia salmonis bacteria.
Brenda Modak, a scientist who is leading the initiative, states that they are considering using a natural compound (wild plants in the Atacama Desert), given that the synthetic products used so far have proved problematic because they accumulate in the bottom of the sea after being applied.
In this sense, the researcher notes that it is "a health challenge of national aquaculture," since this method will make it possible to achieve a less invasive cure and less water pollution of use.
