In the Biobío Region there are 19 landing points and they are distributed in Talcahuano, San Vicente, Coronel and Lota. There are 623 vessels operating this year, grouped into 83 organizations plus the residual quota, which is that assigned to vessels not belonging to organizations. The available catch quota for the year 2023 reaches around 500 thousand tons, including the remaining quota authorized by law.
Around the opening of this common sardine and anchovy season, the director(s) of Sernapesca Biobío, Margarita Díaz indicated that: “the National Fisheries and Aquaculture Service will carry out the corresponding inspection of the fishing fleet and, in addition, of the fishmeal and fish oil processing plants. Likewise, it will be in charge of the certification of landings, which is mandatory for all ship-owners. Our inspection teams are arduously carrying out the inspection work of the common sardine and anchovy capture season, which started on March 1 at 00:00.”
The Seremi de Economía of the Biobío Region, Javier Sepúlveda, commented that this opening of pelagic fishing is very important for the country, since more than half of the landings of sardines and anchovy occur in the region, which triggers productive activities very intense especially for artisanal fishing. “We hope that this pelagic fishing season will be successful and sources of jobs and sustainable resources will be generated for the country's economy,” he concluded.
The director(s) of Sernapesca explained that the first 10 days of capture are exclusively for vessels smaller than 15 meters, and that after that period the larger ones enter. Regarding the quota of the Ñuble and Biobío regions, this represents 80% of the artisanal fraction of the common sardine and anchovy fishery in the Macrozone that covers the regions from Valparaíso to Los Lagos.
