(SPAIN, 5/9/2023)
Imports increase 53% in value
Sales of skrei from Norway have reached historic figures in Spain. Specifically, direct exports of this wild fish have increased by 30% in volume and 53% in value from January to April (the fishing season for this gourmet fish), compared to the same period of the previous year.

Thus, it is the best value campaign in history and the second in volume in Spain. And it is that the volume exported by Norway directly to Spain at the end of the season (from January to April) ended at 1,168 tons, compared to 900 tons last year.
The director of the Norwegian Seafood Council in Spain, Björn Erik Stabell, attributes this good evolution to a combination of factors of various kinds that add to the proven quality, traceability and sustainability of an ultra-premium fish with good value for money. , as well as the Norwegian origin, which has allowed so many successes for various references in this country, headed by salmon, its main export seafood.
“The explanation for this very positive evolution lies in the strong position that has been built through long-term work over many years. In addition, from the Norwegian Seafood Council we have redoubled our marketing efforts in Spain in the last two years to achieve an even stronger position for skrei cod”, adds Björn Erik Stabell.

Likewise, during this campaign the points of sale that sell skrei cod have increased from 5,000 to more than 7,000. To this is added an intense advertising campaign on television, social networks and communication and branding actions. "Spanish retailers are very good professionals, taking advantage of the opportunities offered by our marketing efforts in the country to boost their business figures. I would say that they are among the best in the world in this area", underlines the director.
Stabell also recalls the “long-term” work carried out by all the operators in the value chain. "Fishermen and reception centers make a solid effort to offer Norwegian skrei with the best quality standards that we can imagine and that are not comparable to any other type of fish that reaches our tables," says the director.
For its part, intense control campaigns and daily inspections are carried out every year to guarantee the best standards of quality, freshness, labelling, traceability and product presentation. “When all these gears mesh perfectly with each other, we move the great ‘wheel of the market’ together. This is the main explanation why skrei cod is doing so well,” concludes Stabell.

In fact, Spain is one of the main markets for skrei. In addition to skrei, our country has established itself as one of the main world markets for other Norwegian species such as salmon (which leads the export ranking), fresh cod or salted cod. In total, sales of all fish from Norway to Spain (direct exports) exceeded 30,035 tons from January to April worth 243 million euros (USD 268.29 M) (+12%).
Overall, the final data for the first quarter of the year are very positive. Norway exported 41.4 billion kroons worth of seafood from January to March (more than 3.5 billion euros (USD4 billion)) to all international destinations, up 22% from the same period last year.
In volume, they were 693,400 tons (-8.7%). For its part, the latest reported data for the month of April show that Norway exported seafood products worth 12.9 billion crowns (just over 1.1 billion euros (USD 1,232 M)), 14% more compared to the same month of last year, and 160,000 tons.
Spain is one of the five countries with the highest growth in fish imports from Norway and is the seventh most important market for Norway. The Nordic country is the second largest exporter of fish and shellfish in the world, which ends up in more than 150 countries. In total, more than 37 million servings made with Norwegian seafood are consumed every day around the world (1.3 million meals, only in Spain).
