ASMI: 2025 Weekly Alaska Salmon Harvest Update #7

  (UNITED STATES, 7/31/2025)

Alaska Salmon Harvest Nears Halfway Mark, Sockeye Strong as Pink and Keta Lag

JUNEAU, AK – Alaska's 2025 commercial salmon season is officially past its midpoint, with the statewide harvest now exceeding 85 million fish, representing a robust 40% of the projected annual total. As expected for this point in the season, sockeye salmon continue to dominate the catch, largely driven by exceptional returns in Bristol Bay.

The sockeye fishery has been a standout success, with harvests already reaching an impressive 90% of the annual projection. Over 47 million sockeye have been brought to dock so far this season, and industry observers anticipate the final count will comfortably meet the pre-season forecast of 53 million fish by the time the season concludes. Bristol Bay remains the undisputed king of sockeye production, contributing the vast majority of this year's impressive haul.

However, the picture is less clear for other key species. Unlike sockeye, which typically sees its peak harvest around early July, the much-anticipated pink salmon run usually doesn't hit its stride until mid-August. Current pink salmon harvests are tracking below 2023 levels, with only 20% of the annual projection realized to date. The coming weeks will be crucial in determining the overall trajectory of this important fishery for 2025.

Meanwhile, the keta (chum) salmon fishery is facing significant challenges. Southeast Alaska, historically the state's largest keta producer by volume, has seen its regional harvest plummet by 53% compared to 2024 figures. This sharp decline has pulled the statewide keta harvest down to a mere 9 million fish, raising concerns among processors and fishermen.

In other developments, Chinook salmon harvest data for Southeast Alaska has undergone revisions. This adjustment is attributed to the timing of fish data collection following the July 4th closure, suggesting a recalibration of early season figures for this prized species.
