Solutions sought for salmonid disease

Experts on fish and other animals’ pathology as well as those in human health met this month in Puerto Varas to discuss and analyze the main disease that afflicts the salmon produced in Chile: salmon rickettsial syndrome (SRS).
Twenty six specialists from five countries participated in the 'II Salmon Farming Research Conference,' responding to an invitation from the Salmon Technological Institute (Intesal) under the Association of Salmon Industry AG (SalmonChile).
Intesal general manager, Matías Medina, explained that 13 scientists (seven foreigners and six Chilean experts), three specialists from the Institute, four representatives of salmon producers in our country and six pharmaceutical companies attended the meeting.
For five days the specialists addressed the SRS issue from a multisectoral approach "that made it possible to discuss its implications in detail for national salmon farming and to plan work strategies that allow us to fight against the syndrome," Medina informed.
"We are convinced that the way forward is a better relationship between science and the current production processes," he continued.
For her part, the head of the Animal Health Unit of the Division of Aquaculture of the National Fisheries and Aquaculture Service (Sernapesca), Alicia Gallardo, described the meeting as a breakthrough for the development of SRS research.
"While we have much advanced work, it is necessary to continue with the public-private effort and the implementation of a Sernapesca model, which appeals to the healthcare management, the segmented supervision and the proper communication of the results," Gallardo pointed out.
"We must focus on the stimuli and positive incentives for the diseases to be notified," she added.
During the conference, Oriol Sunyer, a biologist at the Veterinary School of the University of Pennsylvania, emphasized that "the best way to address the SRS is the multisectoral viewpoint, since it is not just an issue of vaccines or of nutrition, and it is not just a producers’ issue."
From the sector, the technical manager of the company Ventisqueros, Pablo Mazo; and AquaChile veterinarian, Emilio Cárcamo, agreed that the activity was "very interesting" because novel findings on the syndrome were presented.
Medina stressed that with the work of experts it will be possible to develop a medium and long term strategy to help solve the problems caused by the SRS in the country.
Intesal general manager expressed his belief that the combined work of scientists and professionals with experience in the field "is the safest way to move towards finding solutions."
