FIS clarifies misinterpretation of tuna group campaign

FIS would like to make it clear that they do not sponsor, endorse, or support The Campaign for Eco-Safe Tuna’s pledge for consumers to stop buying Dolphin Safe tuna.
Unfortunately, proponents of this organization have misrepresented an IN BRIEF post dated 22 July to suggest that FIS supports their effort. This post has been amended so that there are no doubts as to the fact that it is just a press release from that group.
In an e-mail sent to FIS in connection to the above mentioned issue, Earth Island Institute (EII) Executive Director David Phillips, claimed that:
“This post in IN-BRIEF is simply one of many reckless claims against Earth Island, Dolphin Safe tuna, and US tuna companies by the Mexican lobby group because they wish to gut the international standards for the Dolphin Safe tuna label and falsely call their tuna ‘dolphin safe’ despite the carnage they are causing among depleted populations of dolphins. Their position is rightly dismissed by scientists, environmental groups, and the tuna industry.
“The Campaign for Eco-Safe Tuna is in fact a front group for the Mexican tuna industry that continues to intentionally chase, harass, injure and kill thousands of dolphins annually to catch tuna. The tuna they harvest is neither Dolphin Safe nor Eco-Safe and is rightly prohibited by all the world’s leading tuna companies,” Phillips stressed.
The EII Director also pointed out: “Their tuna is also legally banned from using the Dolphin Safe label in the United States and is considered dolphin-deadly by Earth Island Institute and more than 500 tuna companies worldwide that are committed to non-encirclement Dolphin Safe standards.”
“The Mexican lobby group’s Pledge makes no sense. It would have the public stop buying Dolphin Safe tuna caught without any intentional encirclement of dolphins. Instead they advocate the purchase of phony labeled tuna caught by the Mexican fleet that continues the discredited practice of intentionally setting nets on dolphins,” Phillips added.
He also recalled that the Mexican fleet participates in the program of the InterAmerican Tropical Tuna Commission (IATTC). This is only tuna fishery in the world that grants dolphin kill quotas to its vessels. "Mexican tuna has never been certified as sustainable by any of the leading certification groups, including Marine Stewardship Council (MSC) and Friend of the Sea," concluded EII director.
