Central American countries initiate ninth regional spiny lobster ban
(EL SALVADOR, 3/2/2018)
For the ninth year in a row, Belize, Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, Nicaragua, Panama and the Dominican Republic have joint efforts to suspend spiny lobster fishing in Caribbean waters simultaneously.
In Belize, this measure entered into force on February 15 and will extend until June 14, while in the rest of the countries of the Central American Integration System (SICA) it will be in force from March 1 to June 30 of this year.
The action is part of the Regulation OSP-02-09 for the Regional Management of the Caribbean Lobster Fishery (Panulirus argus), approved by the competent ministers of SICA's fishing and aquaculture activities, which make up the Sector Organization Fish and Aquaculture of the Central American Isthmus (OSPESCA).
