Cultivation of the oceans is required to meet demands for food, feed, materials and energy for a growing global population
Can tare growing be an industry? (video)
(NORWAY, 4/30/2020)
Increased cultivation in the sea is necessary to meet the needs of food, feed and energy for a growing world population. From this, there is a need to study the potential of different species for sea production. In Norway, in recent years, considerable work has been done in research and innovation on macroalgae (seaweed and kelp), but production is currently only on a small scale. The recently completed project MACROSEA, has contributed to new knowledge and innovative technological solutions can be used in a future industrialization of the macroalgae industry. MACROSEA has been a multidisciplinary knowledge platform, where biology and technology have contributed to new insights. The project has been led by SINTEF Ocean by Aleksander Handå. Akvaplan-niva has participated in the work package on sea cultivation by PhD student Sanna Matsson.
The project has contributed to increased production biological knowledge about seedling quality, sowing techniques for cultivation of spills and sugarcane, as well as increased knowledge of fertilization and genetics in sugarcane. Growth models have been designed that are linked to 3D hydrodynamic-ecosystem models to estimate site-dependent biomass production. In addition, studies have been carried out on technological solutions for effective sowing, sowing and harvesting. Measurements have also been made of how much traction forces kelp represents in the sea. Data from these measurements has been used in a calculation tool for sizing sea systems under different environmental conditions. From this, 3 different prototypes of equipment for industrial tare cultivation have been developed as well as a model for production potential for kelp.
