VARPE: Russia will be able to provide Africa with fish
(RUSSIAN FEDERATION, 7/31/2023)
In addition to grain, Russia could provide Africans with fish that is in demand in the macro-region, German Zverev, president of the All-Russian Association of Fisheries Enterprises, Entrepreneurs and Exporters (VARPE), believes. The words from his statement at the second Russia-Africa summit are quoted by the official Telegram channel of the association.

“According to our estimates, the supply of Russian fish to Africa can grow 4 times - from 50,000 to 200,000 tons. This is about another 0.5 billion dollars of export earnings. Africa is a market for low-cost small pelagic fish - mackerel and herring, as well as low-cost aquaculture tilapia,” said the head of VARPE.
But, he added, while aquaculture is fairly well developed in Africa (Egypt produces 1.5 million tons of fish annually, for example), large-scale fisheries are not. According to German Zverev, this opens up good prospects for Russian fishermen, the world's largest herring fishermen.
Significant volumes of Russian herring were previously consumed by Nigeria, now this market is growing in Egypt, the VARPE notes. So far, the main supplier of this fish to the Egyptian market is Norway. This year alone, this country supplied almost 27,000 tons to Egypt, which accounted for 69% of all Norwegian exports of such products. According to German Zverev, Russian fishermen are ready to replace this demand. He estimated the prospects for the supply of frozen herring at 70 thousand tons per year.
“We hope that the Russian relevant departments will today discuss with African colleagues the prospects for cooperation in the field of fisheries and mechanisms for increasing the supply of Russian wild fish to Africa,” the head of the association concluded.
