The Undersecretary of Fisheries and Aquaculture (s), Javier Rivera, announced that the draft new Fisheries Law, which will enter Congress in the coming weeks, will reinforce fisheries research as a basis for decision-making on matters in the sector.
This approach was formulated in the seminar "Recovery of national fisheries: 10 years after the General Law of Fisheries and Aquaculture", organized by the Catholic University of Valparaíso and Océana, which was attended by researchers and experts related to the world of Fishing.
Rivera pointed out that for Subpesca it is "very important to review what the last 10 years of implementation of the General Fisheries and Aquaculture Law have been in order to generate progress and improvements in our project and proposal for a new fishing law that will be presented." to Congress soon."
He highlighted that it is "particularly relevant to reinforce fisheries research as a source and main basis for making definitions." He added that "with better fisheries research, decisions are better and, along those lines, the proposal for the new fishing law will generate research support that will allow us to resolve what is most convenient for Chilean fisheries."
The undersecretary thanked the space for discussion and added that "these instances help us to see, as a whole, the international experiences, the advances in fisheries and realize that we are not so far from what great work at the international level is for the recovery of fisheries".
